Worked great and very easy to make!

I used raw cows cream to make sour cream with the cultures I purchased and it worked amazingly well. It took a bit longer than 24 hours but eventually I had thick sour cream. I recommend this product to anyone who wants a healthy alternative to store bought sour cream. It's also a fun activity to do with kids to teach them a more sustainable and healthy way to make your own food.

The sour cream starter is delicious! It's a bit thinner than what you'd get in the store which we like and the taste is SO much better. We go through a lot of sour cream in our house and I don't plan on buying store bought again.

I am looking at using the cream culture for buttermilk. What quantity of buttermilk does one pack make? Also, can you make it with zero percent (non fat) milk? Thank you

Hello Sophia! Buttermilk typically makes one quart (4 cups) of buttermilk per packet! Indeed, buttermilk can be made from non-fat (zero percent) milk with this culture. But compared to using full or reduced-fat milk, the flavor and texture can be a little different. Non-fat milk can still be used to make buttermilk, which is still acidic and can be used in recipes, although it will be thinner and less creamy.

I’m having trouble understanding the instructions (excerpted below) for culturing sour cream. If you have heated the cream to 145°F , I’m guessing you cool it down to 77°F before adding the starter but this is unclear as written. Then, do you cool it further before transferring it to the glass jar for fermentation? I’m guessing you don’t, but the placement of the tip for cooling faster is very confusing. Please clarify. Thank you “1… Heat cream to 145°F and hold for 45 minutes for thick sour cream. It's OK just to heat the cream to 77°F for thinner sour cream. 2. Keep the cream at 77°F and add 1 packet of starter culture; stir gently until fully dissolved. To cool faster, place the pan of heated cream in a sink or basin of cold water. 3. Transfer the cream to a glass container…” Also, the link from the product description to the instructions is missing.

Hi Judy! Yes, you'll want to add the culture in when the sour cream is at 77 degrees. We give that tip of cooling faster in case people don't want to slowly let it cool to 77 degrees! Once the starter is stirred into the cream, you are able to transfer it and let it start to culture!

Hi Kira, Thanks for reaching out! Our Sour Cream starter is a direct-set starter. Direct-set starters are one-time-use cultures. When culturing cream, they generally cannot be perpetuated beyond the initial batch.
