CLEANING MY GROLSCH BOTTLES | CULTURES FOR HEALTH JOURNAL

Grolsch bottle

Time is precious. Neglect of my beloved Grolsch bottles is commonplace. Many moons ago I learned from another CSR about adding an abrasive to your soap and water to clean the gunk off the inside of your bottle. I thought there was no way it would work with what I had…honestly, I haven’t cleaned them since I began fermenting…it’s been over 2 years with my water kefir. Don’t get me wrong! I’m not a slob by any means…my kitchen HAS to be cleaned up before bedtime every night. But, my bottles are another story. I figured, if my water kefir grains are still healthy and I’m getting pop and fizz, then why worry about a little juice and yeast scum on the inside of the bottles? I have so many other fermenting and momma projects to do! Curiosity got the best of me, so I scrolled through months of Facebook posts to find the post about using rice. It said to add a few grains of rice, or maybe it said a handful of rice, but after reviewing it I promptly neglected my bottles for another 6 months or so. Finally, I pulled out the jar of short grain brown rice. I funneled in as best I could about ¼ -1/2 cup of rice, probably way more than recommended…if I was going to do this, I was going to make sure it worked! I filled the bottle about 1/3 full of water, and a couple squirts of diluted liquid castile soap. I capped the lid, and shook. And shook. And shook. Shook some more. Used one hand to shake the bottle and put away dishes from the dishwasher with the other. I kept shaking, and what do you know? IT CAME CLEAN! Over the course of several weeks, I did a bottle here and there. Soon enough, all 10 bottles were clean. See if you can tell the difference in the pictures! It works!
