I love them! It makes the job so much easier. I pour the finished water kefir out directly into my bottles and then pour the prepared sugar water right in through the strainer top. Put the lid on and fix it so it gets air and forget it until time to make another batch. So easy!
These brewing lids work perfectly to cover brewing water kefir in standard wide mouth mason jars. The mesh is tight enough to keep out ants, dust, and debris while letting air flow out. I had been using coffee filters secured with a rubber band. These lids are faster, easier, look more tidy, and don’t use up your coffee filters. The instructions had a note about not tightening them too tight (might be hard to remove if you do.) There doesn’t seem to be any reason to crank them down tight. They’ll do their job ******* on loosely. The screw on portion has indents to allow you to get a good grip on them. It’s nice that they come in a pack of two, so you’ll always have a clean one available.
I could see these being rated 5 stars for water kefir but I can't give them more than 1 for milk kefir.
This is convenient and kid friendly for air flow and pouring off water kefir esp of you have an existing widemouth mason jar, but not essential if you already have something that burps. Note you still likely have to screw off the whole top to add sugar and water. Haven't tried with animal milk kefir which seems a bit thick for this.
The plastic screening on the lids are coarser than my other strainer and therefore less likely to clog up. They will still clog if milk kefir is curdled.
