Have been feeding and discarding my sourdough starter for 3 weeks now and it hasn't doubled yet. It has some bubbles and lately has an acetone smell to it. We do keep our home chilly but I've been leaving it in the microwave with the light on. Any thing else I can do to get it going???

Your starter needs a boost, Emily! Try feeding it every 12 hours. The acetone smell means it's hungry. Keeping it warm is great—consider an oven with the light on or a warm water bath. You’re close! 😊

My question is similar to the very first question listed. I started my culture as indicated in the directions and after the 3rd feeding see no bubbles. Initial temps were around 75f. I've tried putting it in a slightly warmer spot and still nothing after 12 hrs. Should I bother even trying to get this going or is it dead? I live in Vermont and my indoor temp us usually around 65-67 deg.

Hi Steve! Thanks for your question! It sounds like your starter might just need a little extra warmth and patience. At 65-67°F, fermentation can be slow. Try keeping it in a consistently warmer spot (around 75-78°F) and continue feeding for a few more days. You might also see better results by using slightly warmer water when mixing your feedings. If there’s no activity after a few more feedings, let us know—we’re happy to help troubleshoot further! 😊

I bought your San Francisco style Sourdough starter culture. I am now on day 8 of feeding #5 for 3-7 days. I have been feeding it twice a day about ever 12 hours per the instruction booklet included in the package. Seems like it's not "growing" like it should by now. It doesn't increase in volume and only have a few bubbles and a thin layer of clear liquid on the surface 4 hours after feeding. I thought maybe our house isn't warm enough. It was just sitting on the counter but the past couple days I have experimented with different locations. I have moved it to above the refrigerator, and now it's in the oven with light on. Wondering if I did something wrong or if it just needs more time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
